Flower Glyph- Early Childhood Education- Garden Theme

Today, for our preschool lesson plan, I want to share an activity in the garden theme.  This activity includes so many different subject areas.  It has math, basic concepts, social studies, science, and depending on your child’s age and ability, it could incorporate writing.  

A glyph is a data organizer or visual organizer.  I enjoy using glyphs, and they can even be used for assessments. We can discuss that in a later post.  The glyph for today is going to be a flower, to fit into the garden theme.  

This activity fits well with homeschool moms and in the early childhood classroom.  To do the activity, we are going to start with a series of questions.  The choices your child makes or the answers to the questions will determine how his or her flower will look. 

For this activity you will need: construction paper, glue, scissors, and some type of flower seeds to glue to the center of the flower.  

1.  Choose your favorite color of construction paper.  

2.  How old are you?  You will trace your hand and cut it out for the number of years you are old.  

 A three-year old may have a flower that looks something like this:

3.  Do you live in a city, in a suburb, or in the country (rural)?    Using a different color for the center of your flower:

                                      If you live in the city, cut out a circle.

                                      If you live in a suburb, cut out a square.

                                      If you live in the country, cut out a triangle.

4.  Using green, cut out a long stem for your flower.  You will need to think about the size of your child’s family, to accommodate the leaves on the stem.  The child will place a leaf for every person who lives in his or her home.  I like to have them write the names of the family member on the stem.  Leaves representing males (boys) will be on the left.  Leaves representing females will be on the right.

5. The center of most flowers contain the seed pods.  As the flower dries, the seeds fall to the ground, and a new flower will sprout.  If you are a boy, glue 10 seeds (or an even number of seeds, or the total of 6+4) to the center of your flower.  If you are a girl, glue 9 seeds (or an odd number, or 5+4) to the center of your flower.  You can use any choice of media you have on hand to add to the center.  If you have natural seeds, talk about the fact that this is a seed and it can grow into a plant.

From the final product, we can see that this boy knows his age, types of neighborhoods, can count to ten, knows left/right, shape recognition.  For writing, other than just names, you can have him label his picture, or you can write it for him:

I am a boy.  I am three years old.  I live in the city.  Seven people live in my home.  I have two brothers and one sister.  My grandmother lives with us. 

 

For an extension project, if you use a coffee filter (any will work, but unbleached is great) for the center of the flower (or if you have access to those brown paper towels that many businesses or schools use, those are great, also) and simple school glue paste (just a little dot of glue), or a homemade natural paste, and flower seeds for the center, you can actually take off the head of the flower, as you would a real one when it dies back, plant the flower center in soil, water it, and the seeds should sprout for you.
