1 Peter 1:13-15 Study

1 Peter 1:13-15 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior;

My daily Bible Study today. I love these verses. They are an admonition that we must stay ready for action by keeping a sober spirit and a hope fixed on the grace of Christ. What does a sober spirit look like? It is a spirit that is self-controlled, steadfast, clear mind, and one that does not make immoral decisions. Sober spirits do not become “intoxicated” with the worldly choices that are so very enticing.

How do we “fix our hope on the grace brought”? We are to live for the future, beyond this world. Our hope is in the heavenly realm where Christians will be given eternal life in the presence of our Creator, Father, God.

Verse 14 is both comforting and convicting. As Christians, we will be obedient children. We are commanded to not be conformed to the former lusts that were ours in ignorance. WOW, did you see that… “former lusts” that means that they are NO LONGER our lusts. Those were things we desired while we were still dead in our sin, in our ignorance. For Christians, those will be in the past.

Verse 15 tells us how we are to live in the new life of Christ: Holy! We were called by the Holy One and like Him, we are commanded to be holy in all our behavior. ALL our behavior.

Where are areas in your behavior you need to work on today? Have you surrendered the lusts of your former life to live a Holy life? My prayer is that God will continue to convict me and remove those lusts from a former life, a worldy life, a sinful life, and make me more and more holy everyday, with Him as my focus, all to His glory.
